The Ultimate Guide to Bullet Journaling for Weight Loss

Use these bullet journal ideas to help you on your weight loss journey with nutrition, fitness, water, habit trackers, and more!

Bullet Journal for Beginners

What Is A Bullet Journal?

A bullet journal (or “bujo” as the cool kids say) is a type of planner, a way to help you organize your life. You can prioritize tasks, track healthy habits, and plan your schedule.

Some people put lots of time and energy into bullet journaling as their creative outlet, making beautifully intricate pages. Others (like myself) stick to the basics and use simple pages to organize their life.

Try out different pages, layouts, and systems until you find what works for you!

Bullet Journal Supplies

Bullet journaling is pretty simple and straight-forward, so there are basically only two things necessary – a journal and pens.

Best Bullet Journal

The two most common types of bullet journals have either dot grid paper or squared paper. I prefer the squared paper because I use checkboxes all the time, so the squares make it that much easier.

The Leuchtturm 1917 is one of the most popular bullet journals around. They offer both the dot grid journals and the squared journals. They also offer lined and plain, blank versions if you prefer that style!

These journals are great because:

  • they use high-quality paper
  • their covers are durable
  • the pages are numbered (this really helps to keep track of different pages with an index!)
  • they have a pocket in the back
  • there is an elastic band to keep the journal closed when you aren’t using it (preventing the dreaded folded pages!)

Best Bullet Journal Pens

When it comes to the best pens for bullet journaling, there are plenty of good options, but the Staedtler Triples Fineliner pens are the clear winner.

My favorite features:

  • They are colorful, which is not only eye-catching but also great for organization with color coding.
  • They are fine-tipped. The tip is .3mm, which is ultra-fine, making it perfect for both letters and graphics.
  • They don’t bleed through the paper.

Do I have to be an artist to bullet journal?

Not at all! Your pages can be as elaborate or simple as you’d like.

My drawing skills are pretty much limited to stick figures, but my bullet journal has still helped get much more organized.

A bullet journal is great for organizing your life and now it can help you on your weight loss journey, as well with nutrition, fitness, and habit trackers!

Weight Loss Tracker

Weight Loss Plan

Do you have specific healthy habits you are working on to lose weight? Writing or drawing your weight loss plan (like @plan_in_color did in her journal) is a great way to keep yourself on track.

It will give you a visual reminder to stay focused on your goals.

Struggling to come up with a strategy? Here is how to come up with a weight loss plan that works for you.

Body Measurement Chart

Keeping track of your body measurements is a great way to see your progress.

Get even more motivated when you see the numbers dropping from your healthy eating and exercise changes by using a body measurement chart like this one by @plan_in_color.

Weight Tracker

Tracking your weight is such a great way to stay motivated. Seeing your weight loss progress can inspire you to keep making the healthy choices, even when it’s difficult!

Setting weight loss rewards along the way is super helpful, too! That’s just what @lilgirlsummers did on her weight loss tracker.

One pound a time feels slow, but it makes such a big difference. That’s how I lost 100 pounds!

Nutrition Tracker

Food Tracker

Tracking your food is a great way to get a realistic picture of how much you are actually eating. It shows you both your good habits that you want to keep up and the bad habits that you want to break.

Notice you go crazy on weekend splurges with pizza nights, buttery popcorn at the movies, Netflix binges, and ice cream? Recognize the pattern and make small changes to fix it.

Not sure why you’re stuck at a weight loss plateau? A food tracker is a great way to find out.

This food log by @allisonleora breaks down each of her meals – breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack – on each day of the week.

Check out some of these healthy recipes to try.

Water Tracker

I don’t know about you, but I can get so focused on work that I don’t even think about taking a drink of water for hours.

Drinking more water is such an important healthy habit. It helps quell cravings. It keeps you more full. It keeps you hydrated and more focused.

Tracking how much water you are drinking can help you see how much you are actually drinking in a day and be more mindful about reaching for your water bottle more often.

Check out these 7 tips for drinking more water.

This water tracker by @soveryblessed (that’s me!) includes water tracking along with tips to drink more water and the benefits of water.

Weekly Meal Planner

Planning is the key to setting yourself up to make healthy choices. Chances are if it’s 6pm, you’re starving, and you don’t have a meal planned, you’ll probably be reaching for junk food or a takeout menu.

Set yourself up for weight loss success by writing out your recipes in a weekly meal planner. Plan your healthy dinners, lunches, breakfasts, and snacks (Pinterest is my favorite healthy recipe resource!).

Make a grocery list so your kitchen is full of healthy choices to reach for when hunger strikes.

I share quite a few healthy weekly meal plans here and I send out a new one every week to my email list, so make sure to subscribe (you can sign up at the bottom of this post)!

This weekly meal planner bullet journal page by @boho.berry plans out every breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack, along with a grocery list.

Goal Tracker

Writing down your weight loss goals makes such a big difference.

Research actually proves that people are more likely to accomplish their goals when they write them down!

Break them into categories. Have your big goals (like your goal weight), but then break them into monthly (like training for a 5k) and daily goals (like going to a Zumba class) too so you have specific action steps to take.

Not sure if you’re setting the right kind of goals? Here is a guide to setting SMART goals for weight loss.

This goal tracker bullet journal layout by @pipsplans breaks down their goals by category and tracks them by month.

Fitness Tracker

Whether you walk, run, bike, do CrossFit, water aerobics, or do exercise videos at home in your living room, these bullet journal layouts can help you get stronger and more consistent.

Workout Tracker

It is hard to get motivated to exercise! It takes a lot of willpower to say no to something fun (like sleep or Netflix) and yes to a sweat session.

But having a workout plan and actually scheduling your workouts makes it easier for you to see your progress and stick to your plan.

This workout tracker bullet journaling page by @bujobird shows all of the different ways they work out, along with a schedule for the month to mark off the workouts as she does them.

Couch to 5k Plan

Running is one of my favorite ways to encourage people to lose weight because it helps you both burn calories and gain confidence.

Writing out your couch to 5k running plan is a great way for beginning runners to work up to a race.

Want more info on running for weight loss? Check out the post Beginner’s Guide to Running.

This beautiful drawing by @ninasbujo in her bullet journal shows each of her running sessions, from the starting line to the finish line.

Step Tracker

Fitbits, Apple Watches, and other fitness trackers are all the rage these days because they get people up and moving.

Your bullet journal can do the same!

Drawing or writing out your daily steps can show you how much you’re moving and make it easier to set goals to move forward and lose the weight.

This step tracking bullet journal page by @bujonomy shows their daily progress in numbers and green lines to show their progress.

Habit Tracker

Sleep Tracker

Sleep is SO important to weight loss! If you are sleep deprived, your brain can send hunger signals (usually cravings for junk food!) and make you think you’re hungry when really you just need to go back to bed for a few more hours.

Track your sleep to see how much you’re getting. Bonus points if you track your mood along with it!

This beautiful sleep log by @boho.berry shows the hours you sleep every night as well as how many hours of sleep you got.

This is just an overview of the many (MANY) beautiful bullet journaling layouts for weight loss. There are so many more ideas out there!

Pull out your pens and your journal and try out some of these ideas!
