My name is Nardia Mckoy, and I am 25 years old. 2020 was the year that my whole life changed for the better.

Having grown up as a chubby child in my younger years, the pounds kept piling on until 2019. That’s when I reached my heaviest weight of 258 pounds at 5 ft and 8 inches tall. I was unaware of how this affected my health until after I changed and looked back.

As many people do, I usually write a new year’s resolution. I decided to go on a personal weight loss journey at the beginning of 2020, and then the pandemic came. However, that didn’t stop me.

I went even harder despite the negativity. Day by day and month by month, I put in the work. Six months later, I’d lost 80 pounds. I weighed 179 pounds! I was elated and proud of myself. I was also healthier and looked better. My skin even cleared up.

Currently, I’m still on my journey. My current weight is 207 pounds. My weight fluctuates, but I’m still far from where I began.

What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
I was sick and tired of being sick and tired, literally. Tired of thinking I was meant to be bigger than everyone else (like it couldn’t be fixed). Tired of my clothes not fitting and not feeling worthy of looking how I wanted to look.

Motivated by the mental images I created of myself and knowing how I would feel, I pushed. And when I saw changes in the mirror, I fell in love with the process.

How did you change your eating habits?
I wasn’t on a specific diet. I ate foods from all the food groups and limited eating processed foods.

Every morning, I detoxed by drinking warm lime water and chia seeds. I ate a huge amount of fruits and vegetables with limited meat and carbs. I also incorporated intermittent fasting into my daily routine, which greatly helped.

What did your workout routine consist of?
I had a disciplined workout schedule that I created myself. I exercised for one hour five days a week. So if I missed a day, I’d work out three days minimum.

  • I did 80% cardio and 20% body strength training.
  • I also worked out at the same time each night.
  • I did not visit the gym. Instead, I worked out at my home.

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No, I had no surgeries. My weight loss is all-natural.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that (for me) weight loss is 100% mindset, 100% diet, and 100% exercise. Once you are committed long-term, the results will come naturally.

What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight?
Find your Why. Why do you want to lose weight? If your why is strong enough and you are emotionally attached to your why, nothing can stop you.

Be committed to your personal journey and compare yourself with no one. Practice healthy habits that will change your life, and you will be changed forever.
