Tar Heels Open 2023 Recruiting With Verbal From U.S. Open Qualifier Maren Conze

NEW COMMIT: The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has received their first verbal commitment for the fall of 2023 from U.S. Open qualifier Maren Conze of Garrett Park, Maryland.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill!!  I am very grateful  for the constant support of my coaches, family and friends.  Can’t wait to be a Tarheel!!! #GoHeels”

A talented freestyler, Conze trains year-round with Nation’s Capital Swim Club and most recently competed at Richmond Futures where she was the runner-up in the 800m free while taking fifth in both the 200m back and 400m free. She also finished eighth in the 800m free at the TYR 18&U Spring Cup – Richmond after placing fourth in the 500 free at the 18&U Winter Championships – Potomac Valley.

Her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:48.24
  • 500 free – 4:47.09
  • 1000 free – 9:54.89
  • 1650 free – 16:57.44
  • 200 back – 1:58.03

Currently a junior at Walter Johnson High School, Conze won both the 200 free and 500 free at the Maryland 3A/4A State Championships during her freshman season. She has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors.

Conze is a huge get for the Tar Heels, as she would’ve ranked No. 1 on their lineup last season in the 500/1000 free and No. 2 in the mile. Even with just under two years of club swimming still to go, she’s already fast enough to score in the B-final of the 500 free at the ACC Championship level.
