Robert Smith Named Head Swimming and Diving Coach at LIU

Long Island University last week named Robert Smith as the head coach of its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

Smith spent six seasons holding the same position at Adelphi University. The team set 26 program records under his watch and was a CSCAA Schola All-America team all 12 semesters. In 2020, he helped diver Skyler Nenadich qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships, which were cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am extremely honored to share in the excellence of the LIU Swim and Dive program,” Smith said in a university release. “I look forward to continuing the outstanding legacy the Sharks have built. With the steadfast support of the University and the athletic department, I am excited to take this team to the top of the Northeast Conference and cultivate an unforgettable experience for the student-athletes. Fins up!”

A native of Copaigue, N.Y., Smith earned All-American honors at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High, winning a state title in the 200 individual medley in 2007. He swam at the University of Pittsburgh, becoming a team captain as a senior and qualifying for six Big East championships finals. He’s also a seven-time Metropolitan Masters Record Holder.

Smith started his coaching career at Islanders Aquatics in Sayville, N.Y., and Professional Athletic Performance Center in Garden City. There, he served as both a swim coach and a strength coach, as well as the assistant coach of the Islanders national group.

“We are excited to welcome Robert Smith to the Shark family,” LIU Athletics Director William E. Martinov Jr. said. “Coach Smith has a demonstrated record of success leading swimming and diving programs, knows the area, and knows what it takes to compete at the Division I level as a decorated swimmer himself. We are excited to have him join Shark nation!”
