YMCA Nationals: Leah Shackley, Brendan Whitfield, Schroeder Relay Break Meet Records

After winning two events on Tuesday, Leah Shackley picked up right where she left off at the 2023 YMCA National Swimming Championships.

In the first event of Wednesday’s finals from Greensboro Aquatic Center, Shackley won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.21, breaking her own meet record set during prelims (51.71).

The Blair, Pennsylvania 16-year-old swimmer held off Schroeder’s Alana Berlin by a tenth of a second. North Jersey’s Sarah Rodrigues was third in 53.12.

It wasn’t the only YMCA meet record to go down.

Lynchburg’s Brendan Whitfield won the men’s 200 free in 1:33.96, breaking the YMCA championship record of 1:34.15 set by Brendan Burns in 2019. Rock River’s Camden Taylor was second (1:37.16), followed by Piedmont’s Will Browne (1:37.75).

Schroeder’s Emma Lemler, Tori Brostowitz, Alana Berlin and Lucy Art won the 200 medley relay in 1:39.08, breaking the YMCA meet record set last year by Piedmont (1:40.62).

The meet was full of other fast swims as well.

In the men’s 100 backstroke, 17-year-old Daniel Diehl, of Cumberland, Maryland, won the event in 46.47. Schroeder’s Sam Lorenz was second (47.20), followed by Fanwood Scotch’s Roman Jones (47.47).

Somerset’s Emily Thompson won the women’s 400 IM in 4:09.05 ahead of Spartanburg’s Hayden Penny (4:13.10) and Western Connecticut’s Olivia Herbert (4:18.18).

Piedmont’s David King won the men’s 400 IM in 3:48.56, to hold off Schroeder’s Isaac Fleig (3:50.58) and Boise’s Tyler Quarterman (3:53.21).

In the women’s 200 free, Somerset’s Anna Moesch got to the wall first in 1:45.38. Boyertown’s Sydney Gring was second (1:46.26), followed by Upper Main Line’s Alexa Fulton (1:47.36).

York and York’s Nathan Walker, Will Parker, Carlos Hidalgo and Jacob Wade won the YMCA men’s 200 medley relay in 1:30.10.
