Women’s 1650 Freestyle
For the second time this week, Georgia Tech freshman Deniz Ertan has captured a conference title. The swimmer originally from Ankara, Turkey, dominated the final heat of the 66-lap race to start off Saturday evening’s session, and she posted the quickest time in the country so far this season at 15:55.77. However, that time did not hold up as the top mark with Alabama’s Kensey McMahon and Tennessee teammates Aly Breslin and Kristen Stege all posting quicker marks at the SEC Championships.
Virginia’s Maddie Donahoe became the sixth swimmer so far this season (along with Ertan, Stege, McCulloh, Erica Sullivan and Kensey McMahon) to break 16:00 as she took second in 15:59.54. Third went to Louisville’s Liberty Williams in 16:03.60, which was five seconds ahead from the top time in the early heats, the 16:08.90 posted by NC State’s Emma Hastings.

Men’s 1650 Freestyle
Two of the top three finishers in the 1650 free from last season’s NCAA Championships raced the event at ACCs, NC State’s Will Gallant and his Wolfpack teammate Ross Dant. Dant stayed close to Gallant early on, but Gallant quickly pulled away and opened up a lead of almost seven seconds as he won the event in 14:34.82. Gallant’s time surpassed the 14:39.63 by Alabama’s Victor Johansson for the top time in the country, but an hour later, Kentucky’s Levi Sandidge swam even faster with a 14:31.47 at the SEC Championships.
Georgia Tech’s Mert Kilavuz pulled ahead of Dant around the halfway point and finished comfortably second in 14:41.50, good for No. 3 in the country behind Gallant and Johansson, while Dant ended up third in 14:45.57. Also under 14:50 was Notre Dame’s Jack Hoagland (14:48.82), and NC State made it four of the top seven finishers with fifth-place Owen Lloyd (14:50.21) and seventh-place James Plage (15:03.57).

Women’s 200 Backstroke
NC State freshman Kennedy Noble caught up with fifth-year teammate Emma Muzzy on the third 50, and she pulled away to secure her first conference title in the 200 back. Noble, who was third in the 100 back behind teammate Katharine Berkoff and Virginia’s Reilly Tiltmann, hit the wall in 1:50.24, which ranks as the fourth-best time in the country behind Stanford’s Claire Curzan, Tennessee’s Josephine Fuller and Cal’s Isabelle Stadden.
Muzzy finished in 1:50.96, barely holding on second as Tiltmann finished in 27.98 to close the gap significantly. However, the Virginia sophomore had to settle for third in 1:51.05. Louisville teammates Paige Hetrick (1:51.70) and Rye Ulett (1:52.24) ended up fourth and fifth, respectively.

Men’s 200 Backstroke
With 50 yards remaining in this 200 back final, Virginia’s Jack Aikins led by 1.2 seconds and looked comfortably on track for another win. But Virginia Tech’s Nico Garcia, who had been the top seed coming out of prelims, closed the gap slightly on the third 50, and he pulled almost seven on the seventh length of the race. Off the last turn, Garcia was unstoppable. He roared ahead of Aikins and held off NC State’s Kacper Stokowski to secure the win.
Garcia finished in 1:39.49, a time that ranks third in the country behind Cal’s Destin Lasco and the Georgia duo of Ian Grum and Bradley Dunham. Stokowski posted his first sub-1:40 time of the season as he placed second in 1:39.94, just ahead of Aikins’ 1:40.11. NC State veteran Hunter Tapp made it a 2-4 finish for the Wolfpack as he touched fourth (1:40.44), just ahead of Georgia Tech’s Berke Saka (1:40.50).

Women’s 100 Freestyle
After setting the fastest time in history in the 200 IM and coming up less than a tenth short in the 200 IM, Kate Douglass grabbed her third individual victory of the week in the 100 free, and in the process, she became the third swimmer in history to break 46 in the 100 free, joining U.S. Olympic teammates Simone Manuel and Erika Brown. Douglass flipped nearly dead even with teammate Gretchen Walsh at the halfway point and at the 75-yard turn, but she accelerated on the way home to finish in 45.86. That broke Walsh’s conference record of 46.05 set last season and Douglass’ own meet record of 46.50 set in prelims.
Walsh, the NCAA champion in the 100 free last season, finished second in 46.32, which ranks second in the country behind Douglass, and Walsh might enter the NCAA Championships as the top seed in the event with Douglass unlikely to race the 100 free at the national meet (with the 200 breaststroke set for the same day).
NC State’s Katharine Berkoff, the winner in the 100 backstroke Saturday, placed third in 47.02, just ahead of Louisville’s Gabi Albiero (47.06). Those times rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the country behind Douglass, Walsh and Stanford’s Torri Huske.

Youssef Ramadan has captured his second win of the ACC Championships after blasting the 100 freestyle final. After posting the nation’s fastest 100 butterfly Thursday and then the third-fastest 100 backstroke while leading off the Hokies 400 medley relay Saturday, Ramadan used a massive final underwater portion of this race to vault ahead of the field and secure the win. He touched in 41.33, which ranks third in the country behind Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks and Florida’s Josh Liendo.
Virginia’s Matt Brownstead finished second in 41.72 while Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano, the 200 free winner, touched out NC State’s Luke Miller for third, 41.85 to 41.87.

American-record holder Kate Douglass skipped the 200 breast to focus on the 100 free, but it was no trouble for her Virginia teammate Alex Walsh to wrap up another Cavaliers win. Walsh got an early challenge from NC State’s Andrea Podmanikova, but she was up by a half-second by the halfway point before extending the lead from there. Walsh finished in 2:03.68, off her own meet record of 2:03.02 set last year but still almost two seconds clear of any non-Virginia swimmer this season.
The Cavaliers’ Ella Nelson touched second in 2:04.79, which would have ranked third in the nation, but she was disqualified for a false start. That meant second place went to Duke’s Kaelyn Gridley, who just touched out Podmanikova and the Blue Devils’ Sarah Foley at the finish. Gridley finished in 2:06.74, followed by Podmanikova in 2:06.77 and Foley in 2:06.81.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke
Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti led for the majority of the race as he looked to defend his ACC title from last year, but Louisville’s Denis Petrashov had other ideas. Petrashov pulled even with Coll Marti around the 175-yard mark, and when the swimmers emerged from the water after their final pullout, Petrashov had the momentum. He cranked up his tempo and hit the wall in 1:50.51, about four tenths ahead of Petrashov’s 1:50.90. Those times rank third and fourth, respectively, in the country behind Arizona State’s Leon Marchand and Penn’s Matt Fallon.
Virginia’s Noah Nichols, who set the top time in the nation in the 100 breast in a winning performance Friday, took third in 1:51.97, while Virginia Tech’s AJ Pouch swam a strong time of 1:52.37 to take fourth.
