U.S. International Team Trials: Day Three Prelims Heat Sheets; Stacked Women’s 100 Butterfly On Tap

With two days of action concluded at the USA Swimming International Team Trials, the American squad for this summer’s World Championships is beginning to take form. On Day Three, some of the most-anticipated races of the week will take place, highlighted by the men’s 400 individual medley and the women’s 100 butterfly.

In the men’s 400 IM, reigning Olympic champion Chase Kalisz is entered after there was some uncertainty as to his participation in the event on the road to Trials. The top seed is Carson Foster, who had the No. 1 time in the world last year and is coming off a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Additionally, Olympic silver medalist Jay Litherland will see action and look to nail down a berth on his latest international team.

The women’s 100 butterfly is expected to feature a four-way battle for the top two spots, with Tokyo Olympians Torri Huske and Claire Curzan tangling with Kelsi Dahlia and Kate Douglass. Huske and Curzan finished one-two in the 100 freestyle while Curzan won the 50 fly in a near-American record time. The event will also feature Regan Smith, who has already qualified for Budapest in the 200 butterfly.

Olympic silver and bronze medalists Emma Weyant and Hali Flickinger are the top seeds in the women’s 400 individual medley while Olympic gold titlist Caeleb Dressel headlines the field in the men’s 100 butterfly. Dressel will face competition from Michael Andrew, Shaine Casas and Tom Shields.

In the 50-meter events, Lilly King and Lydia Jacoby will duel in the women’s breaststroke and Michael Andrew is the top seed in the men’s breaststroke. Ryan Murphy is the top seed in the men’s 50 backstroke and Smith is seeded first in the women’s 50 back.
