Big 12 Championships: Carson Foster Dominates 400 IM in 3:35.49; Lydia Jacoby Breaks NAG Record
The Texas Longhorns continue to hold massive leads in the women’s and men’s competition at the Big 12 Championships, and during Friday evening’s session, Kelly Pash became the first swimmer to win two individual titles this meet while star IMer Carson Foster and breaststroker Lydia Jacoby each posted impressive winning performances. While Foster recorded a 3:35-mid in his signature 400 IM, Jacoby lowered the 100 breast 17-18 National Age Group record for the third (and certainly final) occasion this season.

Women’s 100 Butterfly
Texas’ Emma Sticklen joined the sub-50-second club in the 100 fly last month, posting a Texas school and Big 12 conference record of 49.79 in the process, and fellow junior Olivia Bray almost joined Sticklen under 50 as she won the event in 50.07. That time made Bray the eighth-fastest swimmer in the country, and her successful meet continued after a close second-place finish in the 500 free Thursday plus several strong relay performances.
Ava Longi placed second for Texas in 52.01 while Dakota Luther, a graduate transfer racing in her only season in Austin, placed third in 52.56.

Men’s 100 Butterfly
The Longhorn men have struggled in several sprint events this year, and indeed, Texas only had two swimmers racing for points in this event. They did not manage to post nationally-ranked times, but Sam Artmann clocked a solid mark of 46.18 to take the win while Cole Crane finished second in 46.59. West Virginia’s David Snider took third in 47.46, just ahead of TCU’s Piotr Sadlowski (47.55), but three other Texas swimmers racing exhibition managed even quicker times: Alek Filipovic (46.63), Ryan Branon (46.84) and Holden Smith (46.91).

Women’s 400 IM
Kelly Pash is established as one of the country’s top 200 IM specialists, but she made a rare appearance in the 400 IM Friday instead of her more customary 200 free or 100 fly. And this was an absolute domination. Pash led by more than three seconds after only 100 yards of racing, and she extended the margin to more than 9.5 seconds by the finish. Pash finished in 4:05.55, moving to No. 9 in the national rankings, while junior teammate Abby Pfeifer took second in 4:15.07. Iowa State’s Lucia Rizzo grabbed third in 4:17.37.

Men’s 400 IM
The top swim of the meet so far belonged to Carson Foster in the 400 IM. The Texas junior who won two silver medals and one gold at the World Championships in June 2022 crushed the field in the 400 IM final, and he swam a time of 3:35.49 to beat his own Big 12 meet record from last season by more than two seconds.
While he was 1.7 seconds away from his own best time of 3:33.79, a mark which ranks fourth all-time in the event (and less than four tenths off the American record), Foster surpassed the 3:35.69 he swam on his way to third place in last year’s NCAA Championships final. Foster ranks second in the country in the event behind the absurd NCAA record of 3:31.84 set by Leon Marchand last month. The only other swimmers to break 3:40 this season are Texas A&M teammates Baylor Nelson and Anze Fers plus the Longhorns’ David Johnston and Wisconsin’s Dominik Torok.
Johnston placed second here in 3:40.03 while Carson’s older brother Jake Foster finished third in 3:42.85. Notably, Texas’ Braden Vines posted a mark of 3:42.47 in prelims before scratching the final.

The three fastest swimmers from Texas’ victorious 800 free relay squad two days earlier all passed on the 200 free, so it was Kyle Leibel who pulled away from teammate Emma Sticklen on the back half to secure the win. Leibel won in 1:45.80, just off her 1:45.51 relay split from Wednesday, while Sticklen made a rare appearance in the 200 free and took second in 1:46.69. Texas’ Olivia McMurray finished well to take third in 1:47.40, just ahead of TCU’s Emma Hultquist (1:47.88).

Men’s 200 Freestyle
Texas is likely to enter the NCAA Championships as favorite in the 800 free relay with World Championships team members Carson Foster and Coby Carrozza leading the way along with 200-meter free national champion Luke Hobson. But in this final, it was the new face likely to join the relay who secured the moment for himself. Peter Larson led wire-to-wire before holding off Carrozza and Hobson at the finish.
Larson won in 1:32.95, only a few tenths off his relay leadoff from Wednesday night while Carrozza and Hobson posted solid 1:33-low legs. Carrozza touched in 1:33.14, just three hundredths clear of Hobson’s 1:33.17.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke
Texas is home to the best duo of women’s breaststrokers in the country, with 100-meter breast Olympic champion Lydia Jacoby and 2022 World Championships silver medalist Anna Elendt both part of the Longhorns’ roster. In this particular showdown, Jacoby got the better of Elendt, making up a slight deficit on the final 25 to take the win in 57.29.
That improved upon Jacoby’s previous season-best time of 57.45 (although she remains ranked third in the country behind USC’s Kaitlyn Dobler and Tennessee’s Mona McSharry), and in the process, she lowered the 17-18 National Age Group record in the event. This swim will surely be Jacoby’s final NAG record in the 100 breast before she turns 19 next week.
Elendt touched second in 57.59, just off her season best of 57.48 that ranks fourth nationally.

In a slight upset, Texas graduate transfer Will Chan took the 100 breast win in 51.65, getting narrowly ahead of TCU’s Jadon Wuilliez and Texas’ Caspar Corbeau by the finish. The top three men ended up within six hundredths of each other, with Chan winning in 51.65, five hundredths clear of Wuilliez (51.70) and Corbeau (51.71). Despite the exciting race, however, Chan and Wuilliez only rank 14th and 15th in the country, respectively, while Corbeau’s season best of 51.30 ranks seventh.

An extremely tight 100 backstroke field saw the entire field finish within eight tenths, but coming out on top for West Virginia’s first win of the meet was Jaqueline McCutchen, who clocked 54.14, with Kansas’ Lezli Sisung (54.23) just behind her. The top Texas finisher was Meghan DiMartile in third (54.36), just ahead of the Iowa State duo of Sophia Goushchi (54.42) and Liz Richardson (54.44).

Men’s 100 Backstroke
The 100 back is another weaker event for Texas right now, and the Longhorns have compensated by using Carson Foster, an IM specialist with strong 200 back skills, as the leadoff swimmer on both medley relays. Just like the 100 fly, only two Texas swimmers competed Friday. That duo swept the top two spots, with Ethan Harder winning in 46.39 and Charlie Crosby taking second in 46.97. Just behind were TCU’s Edgar Cincanci (47.16) and West Virginia’s Justin Heimes (47.24).
