Harry Potter isn’t just the boy who lived — he’s also the boy who enchanted us through his fantastic adventures full of dragons, three-headed dogs, and secret rooms. The Harry Potter movie series officially ended with director David Yates’s second installation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2011. But years later, Warner Brothers surprised fans with an adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is based on a spinoff prequel to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. And now, with talks of a TV show in the works, it’s likely we haven’t seen the last of the franchise yet.
While all of those films were magical, we think meeting new characters who undergo a different journey is just as important. This especially holds true as Potterheads find themselves wrestling with the wizarding world’s complicated place in our culture — the franchise, even with the HBO Max reunion, has been somewhat cursed.
To the disappointment of many fans, author J.K. Rowling has used her platform to post transphobic statements. There’s also the controversy surrounding the prequel films, especially with Warner Brothers’ inclusion of actor Johnny Depp as Grindelwald amidst his domestic abuse allegations. Even with Daniel Radcliffe’s letter against transphobia and Depp’s replacement, long-time fans may find themselves inclined to explore new fantasy worlds.
So if there are Potterheads out there searching for a new magical fix, we’ve got you covered. Luckily, there are plenty of spellbinding movies out there that’ll captivate you just as much as Harry’s adventures have. Ahead, we rounded up the most enchanting fantasies that film has to offer, from ’90s classics like Matilda to dark dramas like Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, all of which you can stream online with a swish of your wand . . . er, a click of your mouse.
